What to Expect

Dr Liska examining derm patient

Welcome to the Dermatology Service! Please complete the patient dermatology history form linked below before your first visit to streamline your experience. When you arrive at the hospital, a member of the reception team will make sure your paperwork is all completed and get you checked in. Soon after, students currently in their dermatology rotation will introduce themselves and escort you and your pet to an examination room.

During your visit, these students will gather a detailed history of your pet’s condition and conduct a thorough physical exam. This hands-on experience is a crucial part of their veterinary education, and we deeply appreciate your cooperation in allowing them to participate in your pet’s care. At some point you will also meet our experienced veterinary technician as they are vital in the care of your pet and ongoing communication with you.

Once the initial assessment is complete, the students will consult with a faculty member to discuss their findings and propose a treatment plan. One of these experts will then return with the students to further examine your pet, discuss potential diagnoses and necessary tests. We will also provide information about costs and about the short- and long-term implications for your pet’s skin condition(s) so you can make informed decisions about their care.

In a teaching hospital it is common to leave your pet with us for further testing or procedures such as bloodwork, allergy testing or an ear flush. This is a great time to explore the area or have a bite to eat at a local restaurant. We are happy to share our favorite places with you. Due to the busy nature of our service, which may involve consultations with other specialists, you may be asked to return later in the day to review the test results and finalize the medical plan. This ensures comprehensive care for every patient.

Most dermatological conditions are chronic, and we understand the importance of ongoing management. Rechecks are vital to successful management! At a teaching hospital the students complete many rotations throughout their clinical year. You will most likely not have the same student(s) involved in your pet’s care. However, the dermatology technician is highly trained and will be an important part of ongoing communications. For long-term care, we’ll work closely with you and your primary veterinarian, offering follow-up consultations by phone to ensure your pet’s condition is well-managed over time.
