Referring Veterinarians

Thank you for trusting OSU VMTH Imaging Center with your ultrasound needs.

Small Animal Outpatient Ultrasound Request Form

OSU VMTH Imaging Center Workflow:

Once our Imaging Center staff receives the completed referral form with supporting documents (vaccine records, lab work, radiograph reports, etc.) it will be reviewed by our Imaging Center staff. We will contact the ordering veterinarian at the phone number provided if anything is missing or we have questions.

We will then call your client to set up an imaging appointment and review pre-visit instructions. The pet must be fasted prior to this appointment for a minimum of 8 hours. To have a fear free experience and to reduce the need for anesthesia, which may delay this imaging study, we kindly request you follow oral

sedation recommendations. Premedication is an effective way to improve image acquisition for both the pet and our staff.

Once the appointment is made, your client will receive a text reminder and an email of the pre-visit instructions. They will receive a second reminder the day before the appointment by a fourth year veterinary students to review the pre-visit instructions a final time and answer any last minute questions.

The Small Animal Hospital is located at 2065 West Farm Road, Stillwater Oklahoma; Our number is (405)744-7000. When the pet owner arrives, we ask that they tell our reception staff that they are here for a scheduled imaging appointment. A clinical year veterinary student will come up to briefly review pertinent history questions (last feeding time, medication administration) and bring the pet back to the imaging center.

The client will be called when their pet’s imaging study is complete. We advise clients that the approximate wait time is 2 hours and they are welcome to wait in our lobby, their car, or they may ndrop off and return when we call.

We ask that you help prepare your pet owner by:

  • Reviewing the imaging center workflow dynamics so they know what to expect.
  • Remind your pet owner that all follow-up will be completed by the requesting veterinarian; our staff and clinical students will not provide any observations or reports.
  • Prescribe pre-medications as recommended and counsel pet owners on their importance in reducing their pet’s anxiety during this appointment.
  • Consider having your staff members follow up with the pet owner following the imagingappointment to make sure their pet is recovering well.
  • Follow up with your client after you received the image and specialist report. Remember we will not discuss results with your client, and if they contact us we refer them back to you.

As the requesting veterinarian, we ask you provide the following medications to the pet owner for them to pick up prior to their imaging appointment. It is okay to give in a small amount of food.

Cats:

Gabapentin 100mg by mouth the night before as well as 1-2 hours prior to appointment time. This can be compounded into a liquid by a compounding pharmacy and stocked in your hospital and

dispensed to the owner for cats difficult to pill.

Dogs:

Gabapentin 10-20mg/kg and Trazodone 5-10mg/kg by mouth given together the night before as well as 1-2 hours prior to appointment time.

Reports:

Reports will be emailed to you, 24-72 hours from the time the imaging is completed. If you have not heard from our service within that time frame, please contact VMH for assistance.
