2024 Equine Castration Clinic

The 2024 Fall Equine Castration Clinic will be held Oct. 17-18. Castrations will be performed by third-year veterinary students under the direct supervision of board-certified faculty veterinarians from the OSU Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Owners will be contacted prior to the surgery date to confirm participation.

 

A limited number of tickets are available, so please reserve your spot if your animal is eligible.

Available services include:

  • Equid Castration
  • Wolf Teeth Extraction (optional)

Patient Eligibility:

  • Horses, Donkeys and Mules
  • Ages: 1 month - 15 years
    • Please email first if your animal is older. A licensed veterinarian will confirm if your animal may attend the clinic.
  • Must be halter broken to safely lead on a halter.
  • Registration is limited to three equids per owner. (Please email if you wish to bring more than 3 animals).
  • Both testicles must be visibly descended. No cryptorchids.
  • Negative EIA (Coggins): Within the last six months at the time of appointment (blood draws on the day of the procedure are available for $39.40)
  • Patients must be healthy and not show signs of infectious disease. (Snotty nose, cough, etc.)
  • THURSDAY - Horses must be trailered to and from the Charles and Linda Cline Equine Teaching Center located at 2601 West McElroy, Stillwater, Oklahoma 74074.
    FRIDAY - Horses must be trailered to and from the OSU VMTH Large Animal Hospital
  • All animals will need to be dropped off between 12:30 and 1 p.m. and picked up before 5:30 p.m. Owners can wait and observe the procedure if they desire.

Patient will receive:

  • Tetanus prophylaxis
  • Antibiotic injection
  • Appropriate anesthesia and analgesia during and after the procedure

Please note: Any complications resulting from the inherent risk of castration will be at the owner/agent's expense. Castrations will be performed by third-year veterinary students under the supervision of licensed equine veterinarians. Castration carries an inherent risk of complications. Severe complications, including death, are rare but can occur. Costs associated with treating major complications are the responsibility of the owner/agent.
